Saphira crouched on the ridge, her vast blue wings folded tight against her body, the scales catching the last copper light of a dying sun. Below, the Varden camp stirred with the murmur of a thousand small fires, and Eragon sat cross-legged on a flat stone, his brow furrowed over a map he could not make sense of. She pressed her great head down until her snout nearly touched his shoulder. The thought came to him warm and low, like a purr behind his sternum: *You are trying to solve it with your hands. Stop. Breathe. The answer is not in the ink.*

He laughed, tired, and ran a hand along the ridge of her snout. The scales were warm, almost alive under his fingers. *You sound like Brom.*

A low rumble vibrated through the stone beneath them. *I sound like myself. Brom is dead. I am here. And I will be here when this is over, whether you like it or not.*
