The Forsworn are the Riders who, at the time of the Great Razing and the subsequent purge of the Rider Order, chose to remain at Galbatorix's side rather than be destroyed alongside their peers. They became the living embodiment of the Rider power turned to tyranny, serving as his most feared enforcers and the last remnant of an order that once upheld balance in Alagaësia. Shruikan occupies a place within this cadre, a Rider whose name is invoked in the context of the Emperor's military hierarchy but who does not receive the same narrative spotlight as Durza or Letha. As a Rider, Shruikan would possess the full spectrum of Rider abilities: elemental magic, the capacity to shape and manipulate the world through will, and the bond with a dragon that grants flight, enhanced senses, and a shared consciousness. The Rider bond is described throughout the cycle as a profound, almost spiritual connection, and even a Forsworn Rider retains the full depth of that bond with their dragon. This makes every Forsworn a threat on par with Eragon and Saphira in raw power, differing only in purpose and allegiance. In the final book, the presence of multiple Forsworn Riders complicates the endgame, as the heroes must contend not only with Galbatorix himself but with the Riders who have served him for generations. Shruikan's involvement in these climactic events underscores the depth of the Rider Order's corruption and the personal cost of loyalty to a tyrant.

In Their Own Story

The wind over Ur'Za'Kor tasted of iron and old blood. Shruikan sat astride their dragon in the upper gallery, watching the battlefields below churn with the last desperate sorties of the Varden's forces. The dragon's scales caught the bruised light of a sky split by sorcery, and in the bond, Shruikan felt the creature's impatience—a low, rumbling hunger for the fight. Below, Eragon's banner had fallen and risen twice. The Emperor's voice carried up through the stone, calm and absolute, as it always was. Shruikan had served that voice for longer than memory. Every Rider who had defected, every name struck from the Order's rolls, had been a small wound. Now the wound was the world itself, and Shruikan's hand rested on the hilt of a sword that had not been forged in any smithy of Alagaësia. The dragon shifted, and the gallery groaned. Whatever came next, it would come with fire.

Role in the cycle: Forsworn Rider, antagonist. Shruikan is a member of the Forsworn, the Riders who remained loyal to Emperor Galbatorix after the destruction of the Rider Order. They first appear in Inheritance, the fourth and final book of the Eragon cycle, during the events surrounding the endgame war. Unlike the more prominently developed Forsworn such as Durza, Letha, or Caim, Shruikan occupies a supporting antagonist role—present in the hierarchy of Galbatorix's Riders and active in the final military confrontations, but not given extended individual backstory or a named dragon of the same narrative weight. Their arc is defined by allegiance: a Rider who chose the Emperor's power over the Order's original purpose, and who carries that choice into the final battle. Shruikan's distinctiveness lies in representing the broader, less-individualized tier of the Forsworn—the Riders who are not the primary antagonists but who nonetheless embody the same corrupted legacy of the Order.
