Before the Fall, dragons and Riders walked the world as a single order, their bond a sacred covenant of equality. When the Forsworn shattered that order, the surviving dragons were hunted, and their eggs were hidden in secret caches across the land—Alagaësia, the Spine, the far reaches of the world—so that a new generation might one day hatch and restore what was lost. The Brood that emerged from those hidden eggs are the sole continuation of a lineage stretching back millennia, each one carrying the memory and purpose of their ancestors in their very blood. The bond between a dragon and its Rider is not a master-and-servant arrangement. It is a merging of two minds into a shared awareness, allowing instant communication, shared sensation, and a loyalty that no oath or law could replicate. A dragon will die for its Rider as readily as it will for its own life, and the Rider in turn will never abandon their dragon. This bond is the source of the Brood's strength and the reason the Forsworn feared them so deeply: a bonded pair is nearly impossible to defeat, for they fight as one. The Brood's numbers are small, and each member is irreplaceable. Their loss is felt as a wound in the world itself. Yet even in their scarcity, they carry the weight of an entire species' legacy, and their choices in the war against Galbatorix will determine whether the old alliance is truly gone or reborn.

In Their Own Story

The cave breathed cold air and the smell of old stone. Saphira coiled in the narrow chamber, her scales catching the faint glow of a single torch and throwing pale blue light across the walls. She had not slept in two days. Eragon's mind pressed against hers—frustration, grief, the sharp edge of a decision he could not yet make. She pressed back, steady and warm, the way a river presses against a stone that will not move. Outside, the wind off the Spine carried the scent of snow and iron. Somewhere far below, in the dark of the world, the Duke's riders patrolled their endless rounds, searching for what they could not name. But here, in the quiet, there was only the sound of two hearts beating in time, and the slow, patient turning of a world that had not yet decided whether to break or to bend. Saphira exhaled. The torch guttered. In the blue-dark, her eyes held the patience of something older than the mountains.

Reader's Guide

Purpose: The Brood exists as the last living dragons of Alagaësia, each bonded to a single Rider. Together they represent the surviving thread of the ancient Rider order and serve as the primary force capable of countering the Forsworn and the Duke's regime. Leadership: There is no single commander or hierarchy within the Brood. Each dragon-Rider pair operates as an autonomous unit. Coordination between members is achieved through shared purpose, the Rider network, and the bonds that link them to a common cause rather than to a chain of command. Territory: The Brood is not confined to a single region. Members are scattered across Alagaësia and beyond, operating wherever their Riders' duties take them. Their presence is felt most strongly in areas of active resistance. Key members: Saphira (bonded to Eragon) and Thorn (bonded to Brom, deceased after Book 1). Alliances and rivalries: The Brood is allied with the Riders, the Varden, and any faction opposing Galbatorix. They are in direct opposition to the Forsworn, the Duke's armies, and any who would hunt or enslave dragons. Role across the four books: In Eragon, the Brood is represented almost entirely by Saphira and Thorn, and their story is one of loss and beginning. In Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance, the Brood's role expands as additional members are revealed and the war escalates, shifting from a personal struggle to a species-wide reckoning.

Did You Know?

• The bond between a dragon and its Rider is a two-way mental link: they share thoughts, emotions, and even physical sensations, making them function as a single unified mind in combat.
• Thorn, Brom's dragon, dies in the first book, Eragon, and his loss is a defining emotional wound that shapes Eragon's entire journey.
• The dragons of the Brood are the last of their species in the world; no other dragons exist outside this small group, making each individual irreplaceable.
• The eggs from which the Brood hatched were deliberately hidden and scattered across the world before the Fall of the Riders, ensuring that even the Duke could not locate and destroy them all.
