Their forges burn without ceasing, and their smiths pass techniques down through generations with a reverence that borders on sacred ritual. A dwarven blade is not merely a weapon; it is a statement of identity, a family legacy hammered into steel over countless hours at the anvil. Their relationship with the Dragon Riders is ancient and deep. Long before the fall of the Riders to Galbatorius, the dwarves served as shieldmen and smiths to the order, forging the great swords and armor that made the Riders legendary. This bond of mutual respect and shared purpose survived the Riders' destruction, and when the Varden rose to challenge the Empire, the dwarves opened their mountain halls and pledged their blades once more to the cause of freedom. Dwarven society is structured around the clan, a tight-knit unit bound by blood and craft. Each clan tends to a particular discipline—some specialize in swordwork, others in plate armor, gem-cutting, or the engineering of siege devices. Decisions are made in council, but the King holds final authority in matters of war and diplomacy. The dwarves are not a people given to grand speeches or political maneuvering; they speak plainly, keep their word absolutely, and measure a person's worth by the quality of their work and the steadiness of their hand in a fight.

The tunnel breathed smoke and the low, rhythmic percussion of a hundred hammers. Hrothgar stood at the mouth of the great forge-hall, his broad arms crossed over a breastplate still warm from the quenching trough, and watched his smiths work the last of the ore before the army marched. The light here was amber and orange, casting long shadows across walls of rough-hewn granite veined with copper. Somewhere deeper in the mountain, a child's laughter echoed off the stone. He turned to the young shieldman waiting by the door—Brom, his jaw set, his old sword already oiled and ready. "You understand what this means," Hrothgar said, not a question. Brom nodded once. The Dwarven Clans exist to forge, defend, and sustain. Their primary purpose is the creation of weapons, armor, tools, and infrastructure for themselves and their allies, while also serving as a disciplined military force when the mountain peace is broken. Leadership rests with the King of the Dwarves, Hrothgar, who governs in council with the clan leaders. Each clan is a semi-autonomous unit organized around a shared craft or lineage, but all answer to the King in matters of war and external diplomacy. Their territory consists of extensive tunnel networks and forges carved into the mountain ranges of Alagaësia. These strongholds are defensible by design, with narrow passages, concealed entrances, and deep underground workshops. Key members include Hrothgar (King) and Brom (a former shieldman of the Riders who became Eragon's foster father and a key figure in the resistance). Alliances: The dwarves are bound by ancient oath to the Dragon Riders and, by extension, to the Varden. Their rivalry is absolute against the Empire of Galbatorius, who seek to enslave or destroy them. Across the four books, the dwarves shift from semi-hidden allies offering forged arms and shelter, to active combatants on the front lines, ultimately standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Riders in the final confrontation against the Empire.
