This specific egg was stolen from Galbatorix by Brom and his allies, then later given to the Varden, who smuggled it to Eragon's home in Carvahall. When Eragon stumbled upon it, he initially mistook it for a strange gemstone. Brom, a former Dragon Rider, did not recognize it immediately; only after Eragon showed it to him and he examined it closely did he realize its true nature. The egg was cold and dormant until Eragon touched it, and it hatched during the Battle of Farthen Dûr, not at the climax of the first book. Upon hatching, the shell shattered to reveal a small blue hatchling who instantly bonded with her keeper. This event signaled hope for the free peoples against the Empire, though no ancient prophecy regarding the return of the Riders exists in canon.
