In the quiet, snow-dusted village of Carrahn's Crossing, Eragon lives with his uncle Brom and cousin Roran, helping on the family farm and dreaming of a life beyond the fields. His world fractures the night he finds a smooth blue stone in a cave. When the stone cracks open and a young blue dragon emerges, Eragon's existence is irrevocably changed. Brom, whom he has always believed to be a simple farmer, reveals himself as a survivor of the ancient Rider order—human warriors bonded to dragons who once ruled the land. Before Brom can complete Eragon's training, the tyrant King Galbatorien's agent Durza the Death Spitter tracks them down and kills the old man, forcing Eragon to flee with Saphira into the mountains.

The wind off the Spine of the World tasted of iron and pine. Eragon sat cross-legged on Saphira's broad back, his fingers tracing the ridge of her scales as they circled above the Varden camp. Below, lanterns swayed in the dark like earthbound stars, and he could hear the low murmur of soldiers changing watch. Saphira exhaled a long, warm breath that stirred his hair, and he felt the faint hum of her mind pressing against his own—patient, watchful, always there. He thought of Brom's hands, rough and steady, teaching him to read the Old Language by firelight. He thought of Murtagh's laugh, now a memory that cut like a blade. He thought of Arya's sword-arm, precise as a whispered prayer. The night stretched wide and cold, and the dragon turned her great blue eyes toward the distant capital where a king still sat on a stolen throne. Eragon tightened his grip on Brisingr's pommel. Tomorrow, the world would ask what he was willing to become. He was not sure he was ready. He was going to do it anyway.
